Polylactic acid (PLA), which is produced from renewable sources and can be composted, is now an industrial product and is being used in increasing quantities to manufacture a variety of products. Because of its relatively high price and to improve its properties in a targeted way, it is often combined with other polymers or reinforcing materials. Among the latter, plantation-grown sisal is popular in warm climates, whose fibres are suitable for reinforcement and, also being from renewable sources, are well suited to PLA. Taiwanese researchers report on their experiments to produce polylactic acid reinforced with sisal fibres.
