Processing closely involves the storage, dosing and transport of raw materials and auxiliary materials. The equipment must be selected and operated with the same care as the processing machine itself. No time or money should be spared in carrying out preliminary tests to ensure that the equipment is suited to the properties of the materials to be processed.
Improving the efficiency of product development is an important factor for the competitiveness of companies. Simulation and organisational tools are being used to reduce the time spent on development projects. A project for the development of injection moulded products has been launched with international participation (Pro4Plast), the results of which are presented in two parts.
Energy saving is the most important aspect in the design of injection moulding machines today. It is still to be decided whether the winners will be upgraded hydraulic machines, all-electric machines or hybrids. Machine manufacturers are not united on this issue, and each is trying to emphasise the advantages of its own principles.
Fibreglass reinforcement can be used to change the properties of both thermoplastics and thermosetting plastics. A new technology for thermosetting glass fibre composites with shorter cycle times and an analysis of the parameters affecting the fibre length in the production of thermosetting PP composites are presented.
In recent years, developments have accelerated in the production of plastics from renewable raw materials. This includes wood-plastic composites (WPC), whose processing technology is becoming increasingly advanced. Their colouring can be used to obtain aesthetically pleasing products.
It is also important for processors to know which gas mixtures are available in their refrigeration equipment and which are more efficient, cost-effective and environmentally friendly.
The economic and financial crisis that started in 2008 also affected the plastics industry, depending on the region and the sector. Companies responded to the challenges with different strategies to survive. As the crisis eased, it was time to analyse the results or failures of these actions.
The fate of inventions and novelties has always been bumpy. The Internet offers a new tool in this area too: open innovation. In the US, several companies have already specialised in mediating between companies seeking answers to their problems and the organisations and individuals who solve them.
The price of standard plastics in Europe has risen between 8.2% (PP-Ko, moulded) and 17.2% (PE-LD film) over the last 12 months (*). In the second half of 2010 (**), it fluctuated within narrow limits; in the first five months of 2011 it increased sharply, e.g. by 10,1% for PVC pipe and 22,1% for PE-LLD film (***). In June prices decreased slightly compared to May (****). (Table 1, Figure 1).
Israel boasts a competitive and exportable plastics processing industry, despite its small domestic market and imported raw materials. Twenty Israeli companies exhibited at K'2010 in Düsseldorf.
Heat causes some polymers to elongate, and under certain conditions they regain their original shape. Heating can be direct or indirect, e.g. in an electromagnetic field, and researchers are investigating the conditions for this. The introduction of polymers with shape memory is expected in the fields of engineering and medical technology.
Nanomaterials-filled plastics are becoming increasingly popular, but so far they have been mainly concerned with their production and quality testing is still in its infancy. Some companies offer specialised equipment to determine the properties of materials containing extremely small particles. The recycling of plastics recovered from waste can only be successful if the regranulates are subjected to the same rigorous quality control and meet the same requirements as fresh materials. Fortunately, existing testing methods are adequate for this purpose.
Make it plastic, but give the impression of metal. Nowadays, in certain application areas, particularly in the automotive industry, such requirements are becoming increasingly common. Post-painting and chrome plating have several disadvantages, which is why the development of compounds containing metallic pigments has come to the fore.
Polyamides are among the oldest plastics, but they are constantly being improved. Their latest versions, developed for the automotive industry by DuPont, are much more able to withstand the high temperatures in the engine compartment of modern cars in the presence of aggressive chemicals. Another innovation is Ems-Grivory's long carbon fibre polyamides, which can be used to make sports cars, but can also be blended with other polymers to reduce their electrical resistance.
The share of plastics in medical technology is increasing, reaching 50% according to some figures. The requirements for the materials used are high, but some of the basic material manufacturers are keen to develop in this area in the hope of a secure market. In addition to materials and adhesives, the conditions for clean room production are also being improved.
A uniform standard is applied in the EU for the testing of waterborne substances from plastics and elastomers used in drinking water systems. There is no such standard for determining the extent to which chemical nutrients released from polymers can support bacterial growth and biomass formation. A Swiss institute has developed a modular test method for the parallel investigation of migration and biomass formation, which it offers for common European application.
László Mészáros1, Tamás Deák1, Márk István Gali1 1 Department of Polymer Engineering, Budapest University of Technology and Economics, 1111 Budapest, Műegyetem rkp. 3. The primary aim of our research was to demonstrate the applicability of polymers reinforced with nanoparticles and conventional fibres, which are nowadays relatively easy to produce, as a raw material for commercially available products. For this purpose, an injection moulded valve cover was chosen.
