Reinforced plastic composites

Several technologies are now available for the production of self-reinforced polymer systems, mainly based on polypropylene. Their impact resistance and strength can be higher than that of glass fibre reinforced systems, although their modulus is still lower than that of composites containing conventional reinforcing materials. Their market is still small, but more and more companies are seeing the potential to develop such materials and find suitable applications for their products.

Even today, many people still regard thermoanalytical instrumentation as being exclusively applicable to scientific research. The following summary briefly describes the information that can be obtained from these instruments, which demonstrate the usefulness of thermoanalysis in solving industrial problems. Developed countries can only remain competitive if they enter the market with brand new technologies and products. This is also true for plastics processing. The greatest progress in this area is in injection moulding. Multi-component injection moulding is still a living practice, but its potential is not yet fully exploited. New attempts are being made to combine this technology with other plastic processing or even metal processing techniques.

A few years ago in the USA, vibration of plastic sludge during processing started to be studied using ultrasound and more recently low-frequency mechanical (hydraulic) vibration devices. Pa-lacquer blasting experiments have been carried out to optimise processing parameters by investigating the weakest zone, the weld zone.

LED headlamps, the light source of the future, have entered the automotive industry. Their use can prevent many traffic accidents and also save fuel. The use of LEDs also poses new challenges for the plastics industry in terms of material selection and manufacturing technology.

This is based on the wide range of modification possibilities of polymers, which can even impart special surface properties to implants and medical devices placed in the human body. For medical applications, there are some general aspects of material selection that should be taken into account by plastics processors.

Packaging of medicines and medical devices with plastics

In modern patient care, part of the treatment is entrusted to the patient or their carer, so the patient can be treated in their own home. To achieve this, medicines are supplied in devices that dispense and sometimes control the intake of the medicine. Such devices require extremely tightly controlled plastics. But it may be that patients who need artificial feeding will in future receive their formula in PET bottles similar to soft drink bottles.

Unusual dyes

Today's colourants include some that not only add colour to the product, but also perform other functions, such as allowing the authenticity of the product to be verified. Other dyes can be made into a solution and - in an „old-fashioned” way - dipped into it to give a durable and special optical effect to the product, even in small batches, at low cost.

The window market in Eastern Europe is growing fast

In Eastern Europe, the use of plastics in the construction industry is the second largest application after packaging, in line with trends in other regions of the world. The window market is growing at a rate that varies from country to country, but is above the Western European average, and the projections for 2010 are optimistic.
