Polyamides: uses, modification, alloys

Over the past ten years, global polyamide use has grown by around 7% per year, and we have yet to see the growth rate level off. A wide range of copolymerisation, doping (filling, reinforcing) and alloying options will allow many new types of polyamides to be commercialised in the future. This is one of the reasons why polyamides are leading the field of engineering plastics in terms of volume.

Properties of plastics

Characterising the scratch resistance of plastics in a new way

The surface of plastics is much more fragile than that of traditional construction materials because they are much harder than many other materials and when they are hit or rubbed, they leave marks. Two types of surface scratching are distinguished. If the surface is rubbed against flat objects or if it is subjected to many small scratches, it loses its gloss, its homogeneous appearance and becomes „worn”.

Production and processing of plastics

New types of surface coatings for injection moulding tools

Today, a myriad of surface treatments and coatings are available to extend the life or improve the properties of injection moulding tool components. Plastic raw materials mixed with fillers or reinforcing materials (glass fibre, mineral fibres, rice husks, wood fibre, metal powders, etc.) exert a strong abrasive stress on the surfaces of the mould parts in contact with them.

Practical application of ultrasonic welding of plastics

Normal joint The typical groove and edge profile of an ultrasonic joint serves two purposes: - it also solves the problem of overlapping the workpieces, and - it accurately fits the two workpieces during the operation. The energy conductor integrated into the contact zone acts as an energy concentrator, while also providing the right amount of molten material to create an optimal bond. The weld profile (1.

New laser and infrared welding systems

New developments in the field of laser and infrared welding, which have made traditional clamping devices redundant, were showcased at two prestigious international exhibitions last year, Plastics USA in Chicago and K2004 in Düsseldorf. Other innovations include the increased use of servo drives for laser, hot plate and vibration welding, a computer control system capable of controlling up to four ultrasonic welders simultaneously and equipment for optically measuring the weldability of plastic parts by laser. According to Leicester Process Technologies of Switzerland, their new Globo laser welder is the first of its kind that does not require the use of a device to clamp the parts together.

Use of plastics

Use of adhesion additives in natural fibre reinforced thermoplastics

Advantages and disadvantages of natural fibre reinforcement The use of natural fibres is no longer a novelty. In particular, the automotive industry uses such reinforcing materials in large quantities. Compared to glass fibres, natural fibres have advantages such as lower cost and a more favourable working environment.

Thermoplastic pipes reinforced with aramid fibre and steel

Plastic pipes in gas transmission and distribution Polyethylene pipes have been used successfully in gas distribution for decades. After appropriate development, such pipe systems have been introduced in the high pressure field. Today, PE pipes are used up to 10 bar pressure. .

Plastic-metal hybrids

Metal substitutes ( PMH : plastic metal hybrids) are available in ever-improving quality. Different technologies are used to achieve this. The Dow company e.g.

Steel hardness medical devices made of plastic

The plastics industry has a long-standing policy of offering plastic instead of metal, but this does not work for all applications. For example, heat-resistant plastics have been successfully selected as a base material for medical products, although in some cases additional changes have been necessary. For the most common products, it has been found that conventionally injection-moulded, steam-sterilised hypodermic needles and surgical knives swell with water in a short time and become unusable.

Polymer applications in cosmetics

Bimodal polymers in hairdressing products Hair fixatives are available in a variety of formulations, such as aerosol, hair spray, gel, foam and liquid. Regardless of the formulation, the only purpose of these products is to form a uniformly distributed, transparent polymer film that makes the hair more beautiful and manageable.

Plastics in the economy

Some of the latest news from Plastics USA (Chicago)

Plastics USA, the largest plastics trade fair in North America, was held in Chicago from 28-30 September 2004, where nearly 350 exhibitors presented their latest innovations.

BASF's new business strategy

As in any business relationship, mutual trust and understanding foster mutual success, so too must chemical manufacturers work with their customers. According to BASF, they are not just in the business of selling their own products, but also have a stake in the market success of the products their customers sell. BASF has six different business models, all of which are designed to achieve market success. .

Market situation of polyamide and polycarbonate in Europe

Polyamide The price of caprolactam, the raw material for polyamide 6 (PA 6), increased significantly in 2004, while at the same time European supply was reduced due to very large quantities being shipped to China. The export price of caprolactam was then around EUR 1,65/kg, and if the processing cost of around EUR 0,35/kg is added, the price of PA 6 is theoretically around EUR 1,65/kg.

Plastics and the environment

Biodegradation and erosion rates in special polymers

When people talk about biodegradable material, they usually mean that material that is thrown away or put in landfills breaks down over a relatively short period of time into elements that mix with the soil without leaving a trace. In reality, it is much more than that. There are biodegradable materials that are used in medicine for surgery or to introduce medicines into the body.

Finite element analysis of a functionally gradient composite roller

Introduction In recent years, there has been an increasing focus on structural materials research, which aims to meet the needs of industry with structural materials with improved properties. Materials with a functionally gradient (FG) distribution have been at the forefront of research, among other things because of their favourable wear properties. They are used to make rollers, gears and slip rings with good wear resistance [1].
